BACK TO THE CENSUS

WOMEN AT GARRETTS

In 1881 Elizabeth Smith was 17 years old. She would have been 50 years old when World War I broke out but where was she? Was she still living in Leiston?

Is she in this photograph of some female Garrett Workers?

Why is this photograph so significant when looked at with the 1881 census?

These women worked at Garretts during the First World War.
Can you see what they were producing at that time?

Are any of these women related to Elizabeth Smith? Or you?

How old do you think they are?

And what is the triangular badge some of them
are wearing on their overall or beret?

We know that the women were making shells but if you know any more
about Elizabeth Smith or who any of the women in the photograph are, or
know what the triangular badge was for, please email us at the Museum
with the information
and we'll update this page as we find out more.
